Winthrop lacrosse gets Big South win over Presbyterian

CLINTON, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team got five goals from freshmen Megan Wallenhorst and Shannon Gallagher en route to 21-12 victory over Presbyterian Monday in a Big South contest.

The Eagles improved to 8-5 overall for their third straight victory and moved to 2-1 in the Big South. The Blue Hose fell to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Presbyterian got off to a strong start, grabbing two goals in the first five minutes to go up 2-0. Winthrop responded with seven unanswered goals from five different scorers. Four of the Eagle goals came off of free-position shots. Winthrop took a 7-2 lead with 8:14 remaining in the first half.

The Blue Hose stopped the Eagle run with two goals in quick succession with 2:18 and 1:54 left in the first half to cut the Winthrop lead to 7-4. Shannon Gallagher scored her first tally of the game on an extra-man opportunity with 56 seconds remaining to put the Eagles up 8-4 at the break.

Coming out of halftime the Eagles grabbed two goals in the first minute of the second half and another less than four minutes into the half to go up 11-4 before the Blue Hose were able to get on the board. The two teams traded seven goals over the next 10 minutes and Winthrop continued to lead by six at 14-8 with 13:41 left in the contest.

Winthrop continued to increase its lead over the final 13 minutes of the game and hit its largest lead of the evening at 20-10 with just over a minute remaining. Presbyterian got two more goals and the Eagles added one more in the final minute to reach the 21-12 final score.

Megan Wallenhorst dominated the evening for the Eagles with nine total points on five goals and four assists. Shannon Gallagher finished with a perfect shot record, recording five goals on only five shots. Sophomore Alyssa Blevins continued her offensive up tick with four goals. Hayley Krause added two more goals and increased her draw control total by seven. Camille King recorded eight saves.

Winthrop outshot the Blue Hose 35-28 and scored on five of their nine free-position shots. The Eagles’ were outdueled in the center circle as Presbyterian tallied 18 draw controls to Winthrop’s 16.

The Eagles will continue on the road in conference play when they face the High Point Panthers Friday evening at 6 p.m.
