ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop senior guard Diana Choibekova has been named the Big South Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to a pair of wins last week against Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville.
Choibekova (New York, NY) scored 17 points against GWU as she returned from a sprained ankle injury that forced her to miss three games. She then celebrated her Senior Day with a splash in the big win over UNC Asheville on Saturday as she poured in 33 points and connected on 10 threes to equal her career highs. She was 11-of-23 from the floor and 10-of-19 from long range against the Bulldogs. She also chipped in seven rebounds, five assists and four steals in that game.
For the week, Choibekova connected on 40 percent of her field goals and was 41 percent from behind the arc.
The two wins last week helped the Eagles seal the No. 2 seed in the Big South Women’s Basketball Championship this week in Conway, SC. The honor is her first Big South Player of the Week nod this season.
