ROCK HILL, SC– The Winthrop softball team will host its annual Winthrop/adidas Invitational this weekend as games begin Friday, Mar. 8 at noon at the Winthrop Softball Complex.
This year’s field includes #23 Georgia, Western Illinois, Delaware State, North Carolina A&T, Harvard and Kent State. Winthrop opens up on Friday at noon against Delaware State and will then face nationally-ranked Georgia at 4 p.m.
The Eagles opened up Big South Conference action this past week as it dropped the series 2-1 to Longwood. It was the first midweek games of the season for the Eagles.
In the three games, Winthrop scored 20 runs but allowed 40 as Longwood pounded out eight home runs and took full advantage of eight errors by the Eagles.
Senior Chelsey Schoenfeldt had a big series versus Longwood as she was 6-for-8 with six runs and five RBI as four of her six hits were for extra bases (2 doubles, 2 home runs). She is currently riding a three-game hit streak. Senior Kathryn Eberlin also hit well against the Lancers as she was 3-for-9 with a run and four RBI while junior McKenzi Corn was 3-for-8 with three runs and three RBI.
In addition to its two games on Friday, Winthrop will face Kent State on Saturday at 3 p.m. and then North Carolina A&T at 5 p.m. On Sunday the Eagles will face Harvard at noon.
