ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop Men’s tennis team opened up their conference season this Thursday afternoon as they defeated Longwood University 6-1.
The Eagles will play away at Campbell University this Saturday, March 16th at 1 p.m., holding a 1-0 Big South Conference record and a 5-9 overall record.
Winthrop was able to sweep up the doubles point with convincing victories on all three doubles courts. At the top spot, sophomores Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) dialed up an 8-4 victory over Longwood’s Becker and Elston. The freshman combo of Corey Decandia (Adelaide, Australia) and Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) dispatched Johnson and Kelleher with ease, 8-2. Freshman Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) rejoined the doubles lineup and teamed-up with freshman Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) to take out Longwood’s Khmiadashvili and Bharani 8-4.
The Eagles kept their foot on the gas in the singles round as four of the six matches were won in straight sets. Freshman Ivar Aramburu (Pueblo, Mexico) had to go the distance to finish off Daniel Elston, 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 at the No. 2 position. Junior Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) took out Edward Becker 6-1, 6-0, while Nagonvak took care of Harry Kelleher 7-5, 6-0. Boada dropped Steed Johnson 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot and Chen took care of business at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Justin Higgs. Comerford battled at the top position but wasn’t able to pull through as he fell to Giorgi Khmiadashvili 7-6, 2-6, 10-7.
