ROCK HILL, SC – Freshmen Claire Feeney and Shannon Gallagher each netted four goals Sunday as the Winthrop lacrosse team downed the St. Francis Red Flash 13-9.
The Eagles improved their record to 3-2 on the season while St. Francis fell to 1-2.
The Red Flash got on the board first in a low-scoring first half, grabbing a goal in less than two minutes. Winthrop responded in a big way, scoring five straight goals to go up 5-1. St. Francis added another tally with 7:25 to go in the first half and the Eagles took a 5-2 lead into the break.
Winthrop came out strong to start the second half as Gallagher scored her second goal of the game in only 13 seconds on an assist by Megan Wallenhorst. The Eagles scored three more goals to go up 9-2 before the Red Flash got on the board in the second half.
St. Francis scored with 17:42 left in the contest to get within 9-3, but two more goals by the Eagles gave Winthrop an eight-goal cushion at 11-3. The Red Flash made a charge in the final 10 minutes, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Eagles held on for the 13-9 victory.
Feeney scored her four goals on five total shots with one coming on a free-position attempt. Gallagher’s four markers came on 10 shots and one free-position attempt. Wallenhorst and Hayley Krause each added two goals and Logan McCarthy added a tally as well. Camille King recorded six saves and got her third win of the season.
Winthrop will now take a road trip to Denver, CO where the Eagles will meet Denver University on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. EST and Fresno State on Sunday, March 10 at 1
