GREENVILLE, SC–Poor playing conditions on the final day of the 2013 Furman Intercollegiate took its toll on the Winthrop men’s golf team as the Eagles tied for 11th place marking the first time during the 2012-13 season they have not been in the top five finishers.
After opening play on Friday with a 285 team score to rank third in the standings just five shots behind eventual tournament winner Virginia Tech, Winthrop shot 297 on Saturday and then slipped to 307 in the final round which was delayed by heavy early morning rain at the Furman Golf Course. Winthrop’s final total of 889 tied East Tennessee. Virginia Tech was the only school not affected greatly by the wet course as the Hokies fired a 11-under par 277 on Sunday and captured the tourney title by 19 shots over North Florida as they finished 21-under with a 843 total.
Senior Kamito Hirai (Summerville, SC) led Winthrop as he tied for 21st place after finishing with a 3-over 219 (70-73-76). Sophomore Taylor Dickson (Gastonia, NC) was next for Winthrop as he tied for 33rd place at 222 (71-73-78). Senior Kyle Bearden (Barnwell, SC) tied for 49th place with a score of 226 (73-73-80). Sophomore Cameron Bell (Charlotte, NC) finished in a tie for 58th place after shooting 227 (71-81-75) as he was the only Eagle to turn a lower scorecard in the final round. Freshman Nick Eberhardt (For Mill, SC) rounded out the Winthrop players with a tie for 98th with a score of 236 (80-78).
Samford’s Drew Aimone and Scott Fernandez of Iowa State tied for tourney medalist honors as they finished at 7-under par 209. Virginia Tech had four players finish in the top 10 with sub-par final totals.
Winthrop will play its final tournament before the Big South Conference Championship when they compete in the Coca-Cola Wofford Intercollegiate, April 14-16, in Spartanburg.
