Tega Cay water, sewer rate hikes to take effect February 8

Despite passionate pleas from residents in Tega Cay, the South Carolina Public Service Commission has approved water and sewer rate increases effective late this week.

Utilities, Inc., which provides water and sewer service for half of Tega Cay’s 7,700 residents, requested the increases in 2011, saying the rate hikes were necessary to help maintain the company’s water and sewer systems.

Residents vehemently opposed the rate increases in December before the Public Service Commission following several community-led efforts to organize in November.

The Public Service Commission approved an increase 33% or $7.65 per month for water service for the typical residential customer. Sewer rates will increase by 28% or $10.89.

Dukes Scott, Executive Director of the S.C. Office of Regulatory Staff, says residents have no avenue to appeal the Public Service Commission’s decision.

Scott says while the Public Service Commission has already voted to approve the rate increases, but the actual order that includes the agency’s reasoning is not due to February 13.
