York County Sheriff’s Deputies and US Marshals recently teamed up to verify the addresses of 347 registered sex offenders in York County.
The three-day effort involved authorities going door-to-door and verifying that the sex offenders were living at their registered address. State law requires officials conduct an onsite verification of each sex offender each year.
“This should give the people of the community an assurance that the Sheriff’s Office is getting ahead of the sex offender registry, they are not waiting for something to happen,” said Kelvin Washington US Marshal for the District of South Carolina.
Of the 347 addresses checked, seven were not accounted for. Warrants were issued for their arrest.
“The most innocent of the innocent are usually the victims in sex offender cases,” said Sheriff Bruce Bryant. “We will hold all sex offenders accountable for their actions, and we do our best to keep those offenders from harming anyone else in our county.”
