The search for a replacement to succeed retiring Winthrop University President Anthony DiGiorgio has gone from more than 100 applicants to 12.

Presidential Search committee chairwoman Kathy Bigham, who is also the  vice chairwoman of the Winthrop Board of Trustees, says a second round of off-campus interviews involving a smaller group of candidates are being scheduled.

Bigham says the community, media and Winthrop family will have an opportunity to meet and talk with the three finalists. She says the top characteristic in the next president is leadership in their professional background.

Bigham says many people inside and outside the Winthrop family have known no other university president than DiGiorgio.

She says a final decision on the university’s next president is scheduled to be announced at the end of February.
