School board member: Rock Hill Schools are Safe

A Rock Hill School Board member says a recently-completed audit by a national firm shows that the district is in better shape in terms of safety than most other districts in the country.

Walter Brown explains what the district does to keep its schools safe.

Brown says the doors are kept locked and cameras are used to check the buildings.  Even in the wake of the mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., he says the district right now is not considering placing school resource officers in elementary schools.

Brown says state lawmakers could mandate some type of increased security at all schools.  He says legislation currently pending in Columbia would allow anyone with a concealed weapon permit to carry a gun into a school.

He says the board should not pass a resolution supporting or criticizing that bill.

Brown represents District 5 on the Rock Hill School Board.
