In a surprising twist in the search for Fort Mill’s next Town Manager, council is looking across Interstate 77 for the town’s next leader.

After a search for a Town Manager this fall ended unsuccessfully Thanksgiving week, Town Council briefly considered hiring an outside firm to handle recruitment duties. But Friday, town spokeswoman Kimberly Starnes said council tapped Dennis Pieper, current City Manager of Tega Cay, for the position.

“Town Council has met with Mr. Pieper and reviewed his resume,” Starnes said in a written statement. “After the meeting, Mayor Funderburk indicated he would approach Mr. Pieper on possible contract terms and bring council his findings.”

Terms of Pieper’s contract will be proposed at the council’s December 10 meeting. Pending approval of that contract, Starnes said Funderburk expects to present a formal contract to Pieper for his signature.

Pieper was hired as Tega Cay City Manager in 2011.

David Hudspeth, the outgoing Town Manager of Fort Mill, is set to retire February 2, 2013.
