One Winthrop student has died and two others were injured this weekend in a crash in Kershaw County.

21-year-old Morgan LeAnna Hughes, a senior Special Education major from Conway, S.C., died after the vehicle was riding in struck from behind on Interstate 20. Hughes was a passenger in the front seat.

Two other Winthrop students, Christian McBee and Caitlin Livingston were also injured in the wreck and taken to a Columbia hospital.

Livingston is expected to be released soon, but expressed to Winthrop staff that her heart is broken.

The three roommates were on their way back to Winthrop’s campus Sunday when they slowed down on I-20 as search crews were pulling the bodies of two North Carolina teens missing for two weeks from the Wateree River.

Hughes was an active member of the Winthrop Quidditch Team, for which she served as treasurer. Last week she presented at the state math conference with Richard W. Riley College of Education faculty. She was working as an intern at Chester High School.

“Our campus is truly lessened by Morgan’s passing,” said Vice President for Student Life Frank Ardaiolo. “Please join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to Morgan’s family as we also pray for a quick and full recovery for Christian and Caitlin.”
