A veteran broadcaster and radio pioneer in South Carolina has died. Wally Mullinax of Greenville died Saturday.

Mullinax began his career in 1944 at W-F-B-C radio.  In the 1960s, he was among the first broadcasters in the country to program a full-time country music format.  He helped several stations in major markets switch to country and western programming.

Mullinax is also credited with scheduling weekly motor sports in Greenville and helping make college football games available in small markets in the Carolinas and Georgia.  He co-founded WMTY-AM in Greenwood and later added WMTY-FM.

Mullinax was active with the South Carolina Broadcasters Association and served as its president in 1974.
