[media-credit name=”ANDREW KIEL/WRHI” align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]Earlier this summer thousands of people turned out at Manchester Meadows for the US Youth Soccer National Championships.

This weekend, a couple thousand more will likely turn out at the new Giordana Velodrome for the Omnium Track National Cycling Championships. Thad Fischer, the Velodrome’s cycling coordinator, couldn’t be more thrilled.

Fischer says there will be two sessions of races — today and Saturday starting at 9 a.m. and again at 6 p.m.

Mayor Doug Echols says Rock Hill has had a lot of success hosting national and regional sporting events in part by providing good ole southern hospitality.

There are about 2,000  extra temporary seats available for spectators.   Rock Hill is the first city outside the state of California to host these cycling national championships.  They’re coming back next year.

  1. so what does the velodrome do? alienates potential cycling enthusiasts with their restricted parking policy. arrived to find the racing was very limited this morning, over before 10:30 a.m. and parking is not allowed near the venue!!! It certainly appeared that there was ample parking at the track for all the cars stuck out on the streetside. Rock Hill if you want to be successful don’t do the obvious to alienate the public!
